We could all use a little comedic relief, just take it from our resident opera singer, Margaret Siegrist. Yes, you read that right. In addition to creating brand connections and data-driven strategies as a member of our Insight team, Margaret is a trained classical singer and star mezzo-soprano. Now that’s what we call range! Join us as we get to know Margaret in the latest edition of VJ’s Random Reveal.
What trend do you hope makes a comeback?
Comedy. We’ve been living in a moment of seriousness in media, arts, culture—which is to be expected after all we’ve all been through lately! But comedy can also be a powerful tool for collective catharsis and navigating tough issues, often more impactful than dramatic content. So that’s my vote. Make ’em laugh!
What is your most overused word or phrase?
“Make an impact.” In fact, I’m only a question and a half in, and I’ve already managed to work it into this reveal. I stick by it! That’s what I’m about!
If someone were to write a movie about you, where would the opening scene take place?
An endless cycle of pilgrimages to the coffee pot.
On a Sunday morning, you can find me…
Taking long walks around the leafy, park-filled Capitol Hill area with a book in hand. Other times I’m setting off to explore a new city on one of my super-quick weekend travel endeavors.
If you were a pasta shape, what shape would you be and why?
Bow tie. It speaks to the smart style I enjoy, and more practically, it holds an adequate amount of sauce to make every bite tasty.
You find yourself onstage at a talent show, what are you performing?
I’m VJ’s resident opera singer. So probably that.
More specifically, I’d likely be singing an exuberant love song from the POV of an approximately 15-year-old boy. Stay with me. In opera there’s a tradition called trouser roles. These are characters who are young, generally very endearing pre-pubescent guys written to be played by young women with mid to high voices. A famous example is Hansel from the opera Hansel and Gretel. Since I look young on stage, sing mezzo-soprano, and LOVE bringing tons of goofiness and energy to a show, pants roles are my operatic bread and butter! Fun, right?
