VJ Volunteers

By Meredith Vaughan, Chief Executive Officer

Today, on the 10th anniversary of Colorado Gives Day, we’re reflecting on the many ways we give where we live. As an agency, and as individuals, we make financial contributions to the causes we support. We also give with our time and energy.

Our senior proofreader Dan Rosing exemplifies this commitment. He and his wife, Ann, have been volunteering for the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) for about 10 years, primarily fostering kittens.

Yes, it’s just what you imagine it is, and more.

When kittens arrive at the shelter too young, with health issues and/or needing socialization, HSPPR places them in a foster home until they’re at least two pounds, healthy and socialized. The cats then go back to HSPPR to be spayed/neutered and adopted out to their “forever home.”

Bottle babies—kittens in the two- to four-week-old range—especially need a lot of attention. They feed on formula from a bottle about every three hours. Gradually, the Rosings extend the time between feedings and help the kittens learn to eat slurry (a mix of formula and wet food), then wean them from the bottle as they transition to wet and dry food only.

So far, Dan and Ann have hosted about 150 animals in their home. It all started with fostering a pregnant stray cat, who after a week welcomed five kittens. They’ve also cared for puppies and dogs, rabbits, a three-legged dog recovering from amputation surgery, and an older dog rescued from a puppy mill.

Just this year, they’ve devoted nearly 500 hours to their work for and with HSPPR. Beyond fostering, they also support annual events like Pawtoberfest and Fur Ball, perform administrative tasks on site, and assist with writing educational materials.

Thank you, Dan and Ann, for all you do in our community.
