In this spirit, we’re featuring other independent brands we love. This week we bring you CUE Audio, a company that offers data-over-audio technology to create synchronized audience engagement experiences at games, concerts and other events.
Founder Jameson Rader, selected for this year’s Forbes 30 Under 30 in the Sports category, started the company in 2017. He had been working on building an app for a minor league hockey team. Later, realizing there was great potential in controlling the app as well, he used inaudible, high-frequency tones to send data packets to phones.
In initial activations, sports teams and events venues used the technology to run coordinated light shows in sync with audio files, seeing a pronounced effect from only 15 percent of the audience using their app. CUE Audio clients can now also use the technology to engage audiences with branded photo frames, trivia, and coupons or special offers. Repeating events, such as University of Tennessee men’s basketball games, see upwards of 50 percent app usage.
CUE Audio puts a major focus on the sports events category, which company leaders estimate contributes the majority of the estimated 300,000 people who enjoy CUE Audio technology per week. NFL teams such as the New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans and Green Bay Packers all partner with CUE Audio. As do more than 50 NCAA Division I universities like UCLA, University of North Carolina, Clemson University, University of Kentucky and Purdue University. Fans at the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship enjoyed a light show enabled by CUE Audio, too.
As the CUE Audio team continues to innovate, they’ll give existing clients like sports leagues, performing artists, and regular events new ways to engage and deepen relationships with their audiences. They are setting their sights beyond the sporting world by creating enhancements to partner with corporate clients and theme parks, too.
