This month, with our fourth installment of Brands We Love, we’re focusing on family businesses. We’re curious about how this ownership style shapes and influences other brands and their businesses, as it has definitely shaped ours over the last 50 years.
Matthew and Michael Krueger, brothers and owners of Krueger Brothers Construction, started their Colorado Springs-area general contracting business with expertise in exteriors (e.g., roofing, siding, windows and decks) in 2009.
Neither had previously owned or led a business. Nonetheless, through careful professional observation and personal study, they realized how they could (and should) create an entirely different and better business entity in the commercial and residential construction industry.
The concept started, and has stayed, remarkably straightforward. The Krueger brothers put people first, treating every project as the beginning of what ideally becomes a long-term relationship with every customer. And this philosophy applies to the company’s team, too.
Whereas the typical model for construction work involves a general contractor subcontracting to many different specialists, Krueger Brothers Construction takes a different approach. The family business employs a team of 40 (and rising) construction workers and project managers who, working as one, consistent team, enable the company to deliver a high standard of quality on every job.
The company does also engage subcontractors on some projects; however, even that link is stronger on a Krueger Brothers Construction site. Every person on the crew is responsible for being timely, transparent and diligent in their work. They’re also better supported if things go wrong.
For customers, this model means greater consistency in points of contact on the job, a highly accountable team that’s directly responsible for the work being done, and enhanced assurance that their goals will be achieved.
Matthew and Michael have established, and continually seek to improve upon, a company culture that’s complementary and connected to the customer experience. They start quarterly leadership meetings by celebrating victories, both large and small, followed by group discussion of ways in which the wins could have been achieved more quickly or more smoothly. A whole-company commitment to transparency and continual improvement allows for timely resolution of conflict.
Krueger Brothers Construction also pays close attention to individual and collective advancement. In addition to quarterly and annual incentives, the brothers offer an array of benefits unusual for companies its size, including health insurance and a 401(k) matching program. And, looking outside their immediate purview, the brothers have plans to create a craftsman training program to uphold and elevate industry standards for exterior construction and help more young people, from any background, enter the field and succeed.
Krueger Brothers Construction is an exemplary family business for placing people and relationships highest on its list of priorities. Their view of success is long term, with a brilliant brand that has extraordinary room to grow and do even more good in the world. We’re proud to count the company as a client, and we look forward to continuing to support its evolution in our community and the construction industry at large.
Now in our 50th year of business, Vladimir Jones is Colorado’s original independent, integrated advertising agency, with offices in Denver and Colorado Springs. We believe in brilliant brands and love making the world love them as much as we do.
